2023 Mustang order banks

Ford Australia says it is yet to decide when it will reopen the order books for the Mustang while it fills the existing customer backlog. There’s also a chance some customers may back out of the deal once the new model is unveiled in a fortnight.

Customer orders for the 2023 Ford Mustang remain closed in Australia until the company can clear a backlog of orders for the runout model.

In an interview during the media preview for the Ranger Raptor, the boss of Ford Australia, Andrew Birkic, told Drive: "We had to close the order books for the Ford Mustang because we have greater levels of demand versus supply.

“We felt the best approach for the customer was to just hold orders and let us work through the order bank. Then we’ll reassess opening up Mustang orders again, based on supply and demand.”

The seventh-generation Ford Mustang, due to be revealed on September 14.

Mr Birkic said the current-generation Ford Mustang is still in production. However, the global launch of the next model is in two weeks.

“We paused orders due to supply challenges, not because there is a new one about to be unveiled,” said Mr Birkic.

“We’re taking this one step at a time. Let’s get through the orders we have, then we will reassess whether we open up orders again and how many we might bring in.”

When asked how many Mustang orders Ford was already holding for the runout model, Mr Birkic said: “We’re not sharing that level of detail.”

When asked if Ford was worried some buyers might back of the deal and wait for the new model, Mr Birkic said: “That could be the case. Ultimately customers will make that decision.

"Because it’s a global reveal, everyone’s going to have that level of information on the new Mustang – and then customers will start to make those decisions. For now, our priority is to just work through our backlog.”
