Hi all,

I have an Oculus Quest 2, and am trying to run it wirelessly with my PC using an app called virtual desktop. My main router connected to my service provider is near where I use the Quest 2, however my PC is upstairs. I have run 2 ethernet cables [both cat 6 shielded/armoured, outdoor uv] from my study and accross the back wall of my house and back in downstairs to where I use the headset. I use one cable for transferring a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and sound and use Ibik Aster to use the PC as two seperate computers. The other ethernet cable connects between a 1gbps switch in the study to my main router. The switch then connects to various devices and the computer. The headset has poor latency and network spikes whilst going through the network switch.

I had already run a 15m usb 3.0 active cable from my pc, down through a wall to the room below so I could use the headset wired to the PC. I therefore decided to get a seperate router, and link it to the PC via ethernet -> usb adapter. I got a 1gbps adapter, and connected it to the pc through the USB 3.0 cable. I then shared the internet connection accross the two connections into the PC. When using virtual desktop, the maximum bitrate you can set is 150mbps. If I connect my headset to the 2nd router I get a bitrate option of around 80mbps - 130mbps. If I connect the headset to my main router I get upto around 130mbps, but the latency and spikes etc aren't ideal.

If a router is capable of higher speeds, how/why can't I connect to my PC through my 2nd router at a higher bitrate? For example, if I had a 300mbps internet connection or more, then a 5GHz connection to a router with no other devices linked would be likely to achieve over 150mbps constantly if in close range.

The router for the headset is a Huawei AX3 3000 Wifi 6. I am connected via the 5GHz band, and the headset can go up to 1200mbps, I use it at a distance of approximately 3 meters in clear line of sight. The Huawei AX3 goes Router [1gbps ethernet ports] -> 1gbps ethernet adapter -> USB 3.0 cable -> PC.

My main router is a Linksys Velop Whole Home system.

If it matters, my PC has the following spec:

Intel 10600k

Palit RTX 2080ti Gaming Pro OC

Asus TUF gaming Z490-Plus Wifi

16GB [2x8gb] 3600mhz RAM

M.2 SSD's as boot and storage

My internet is 100mbps Up/Down

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,

Mark

Hey guys,

this is not a expert review. This is just my own opinion about the budget WIFI 6 router Honor 3 [think it is the same like the Huawei WiFi AX3] and the Asus RT-AX58U router. I got my Honor 3 for 55$ and the Asus RT-AX58U for 148$.

I played with the Honor 3 for three weeks about 1-2 hours per day. I was quite happy with it. It was a lot better than my ISP router. After 3 weeks of usage I run into heavy issues. I had so much lag and my FPS were so low that it was impossible to play. I thought it was a PC or VD or Quest 2 issue, because the latency was still normal but the FPS were low. After days of searching I decided to buy and test the Asus RT-AX58U. But in the meantime the error has simply disappeared. Yesterday I received my Asus router and I decided to test it against the Honor 3.

First of all, the Asus router is totally superior to HONOR 3 in terms of setup and settings. But I try to focus this "review" on the VD performance. For both the setup of both router I followed the guide: //www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/je4lhi/guide_for_buttery_smooth_vd_over_wifi/

I tested only two games Asgards Wrath and Half Life Alyx for 10 minutes with both routers in direct comparison. Afterwards I had a two hours long session with the Asus router with Blade & Sorcery and Alyx. I tested it with the same settings ingame and same settings for VD [you can see it in the screenshots]. I was in the same room and the router was placed at the same spot.

[sorry for the bad quality. it is the first time I upload images to reddit and made screenshots with the quest]

To be fair these are just screenshots from a 10 minute game session. The range I saw on the Asus router for the latency was 32-45ms [ingame combined] and 10ms-22ms on Desktop. With the Honor 3 it was 35ms - 45ms and 12ms-25ms on the Desktop. From my point of view, in average it was with the Asus slightly below 40ms and with the Honor slightly above 40ms.

So from a latency point of view there is not much difference between them [maybe 3-7 ms]. From my feelings the Asus is a tiny bit ahead.

I think the key point is the stability and micro stutter. Like I mentioned I played for three weeks with the Honor 3 and I was quite happy. I had some lags, black edges and micro stutter, but I thought it is normal and it did not really bother me.

After my direct comparison I used the Asus router for a 2 hours long session in Alyx and B&S [8.3 with mods... you know this game is sometimes a bit buggy and laggy] This session was the smoothes session I experienced so far. In Alyx I had no noticeable input delay, no micro stutter, no framedrops.. It was just perfect. But Alyx is really good optimized so I decided to try out B&S. This was always hard to play via VD because you feel input lag really directly. But also this session was really really good and I didn't noticed any difference to Oculus Link.

I decided to keep the Asus router, but I also had a good time with the Honor 3. I think the Honor 3 is okay [when it was not the reason for my low fps issue]. But when you have a good Wifi 5 router I think it gives you no real advantages. I think the reason why you buy a WIFI 6 is the latency and stability. The latency from the Honor 3 quite good [it is about 40 ms avg ingame], but the stability is in need of improvement. When I compare the Honor 3 with my ISP router it is a real improvement in all points. My ISP router has a latency of 55ms and it was sometimes not playable because the stability. Had so many lags and frame drops.

In the end you have decide if you want to spent 150$ [or 50$] for a 300$ headset. I love VD and the freedom to play without cable.

If you have any further questions, I can try to answer them. Like I said I'm not a network expert just a normal [power] user. Maybe you have some other test results to share. I have talked with some on discord and some had issues with the Honor and some not.

PC Specs: Ryzen 3700x, 32gb 3600mhz cl16, RTX 3070, PCIe 4.0 SSD

VD Settings: H.264, Medium Graphics, 110 mbit/s bandwith, 80 fps, sliced encoding on
