Attachments in Gmail messages you send and receive are automatically scanned for viruses. If an attachment you're trying to attach is infected with a virus, you'll see a "Virus detected!" error message. You'll see the option to send the email without the attachment. What happens when viruses are found
Virus in an email you're sending
Virus in an email sent to you
When Gmail finds a known virus attached to an email that's been sent to you, Gmail will reject the message and let the sender know.
If Gmail finds a virus in an attachment on an email that's already in your inbox, you won't be able to download the attachment.
"Gmail virus scanners are temporarily unavailable" error
You might get this error if Gmail can't scan certain files at the moment. Try downloading the attachment later, or you can open the attachment at your own risk.

How can we improve it?
I've been told by so many printer technicians and confused clients that as of today they can't use Gmail for their scan-to-email setup. While it is true that Google had updated their security standards, it can still be used with App Passwords!
In order to use scan-to-email:
Enable 2FA on the Gmail account in question. You can do this at myaccount.google.com/security under the "Signing in to Google" section.
Once 2fa is enabled, you should see an option for "App Passwords" in the "Signing in to Google" section. An App Password just means a secure password that can only be used by one application. When given a dropdown for type, click "Other" and then fill in a label, such as "OP's Scanner".
Copy the random password that is created and save it somewhere safe. Once you continue, you can't see it again, and will have to make a new App Password.
Log into your scanner and replace your normal gmail password with the App Password you created. This allows you to continue using the scanner without needing 2FA.
If for some reason your smtp settings have changed, set them back to the default for Gmail:
Server name: SMTP.GMAIL.COM
Port: 587
SMTP Security: STARTTLS
That's it! You can now use your scanner with your Gmail account to send scans to email. Hopefully my rant/walkthrough has been helpful, and let me know if there's anything I need to update or address.
This document is for HP printers that support scanning to email from the printer control panel.
When adding your email account to the scan to email feature on the printer control panel, the email server blocks access to your email account and one of the following error messages might display:
Gmail requires an additional security step. Please check your email security settings online.
The email or password that was entered is not working. Please try again.
The SMTP server uses an authentication method that is not supported. Try a different server.
Authentication failure SMTP: SMTP server does not support authentication.
Cannot resolve the SMTP server. Check the SMTP and DNS server settings with your system administrator or Internet Service Provider.
Some email account service providers, such as Google or Yahoo, block access by third-party apps for security reasons. To allow the scan to email feature access to your email account, go to your email account service provider for detailed steps.
note:If you turned on two-step authentication, you must create an application password for the scan to email feature to access to your email account. See your email account provider for more information.
Other email accounts: From a trusted device, sign in to your email account. Go to your account settings, search for authentication, SMTP, or security, and then follow the on-screen instructions to set-up access for the scan to email feature.
