How much better is a Netherite sword?

How to get Netherite: Ancient Debris spawns anywhere between 0 and 20 Y level in the nether, it's technically rarer than diamond, but about as easy to get as diamond considering that netherrack can be instamined without a beacon. It can only be mined with a Diamond pickaxe or Netherite pickaxe. Ancient Debris is smelted into Netherite Scrap, and you need 4 Netherite Scrap + 4 Gold Ingots to craft 1 Netherite Ingot.

But, because 4 Ancient Debris are required to make 1 Netherrite Ingot, it increases the difficulty to obtain the armor/tools over Diamond by about 4x. EDIT 3: After seeing the actual recipe for the items, I can see that it's actually really a good idea to get this because it only costs 1 Netherite Ingot + 1 Diamond equipment piece to make Netherite gear.

Netherite armor/tools have roughly 1.3x the durability of Diamond, but the tools are all the same speed as Diamond tools, which makes them not worth getting because the difficulty to obtain is 4x greater than Diamond. i.e. If the only upside is durability, then it would be more efficient to spend your time mining Diamonds for more pickaxes.

e.g. In the time it would take to get a single Netherite Pickaxe [12 Ancient Debris, 2031 durability], you could have gotten 4 Diamond Pickaxes [12 Diamond, 6244 [1561x4] durability].

The only things potentially worth using are the Sword [has +1 damage at all levels over Diamond] and the Armor [Same defense as Diamond, but with +1 Knockback Resistance and a new stat called Armor Toughness which I assume makes its defense technically higher than Diamond].

TL;DR: This is an endgame PVP/PVE armor/tool set. The tools are not worth crafting.

I actually appreciate that Mojang is adding new elements of progression to the game after it's been left untouched since Enchanting was added. I see this addition as the developers getting their feet wet to see how the community reacts to adding things that might change the core progression system. They're not being lazy by not adding tons of stuff to the game all the time, they're being safe because this is a game that's been built up over a decade and they don't want to ruin it for people who play it for what it's always been. Though it's a good thing that we on the Java Edition can play whatever versions we want, even if they add something we don't like.

EDIT: Forgot to mention for people who love Redstone: Ancient Debris is explosion-resistant like Obsidian, but can also be moved by pistons. :D

EDIT 2:  In the official post for Snapshot 20w06a, it says two things that, from my testing, seem to not be true in the current snapshot.

  • Netherite items have higher enchantment value than diamond [but not as high as gold]
  • Netherite tools work faster and last longer than diamondRead More

Mehnix·1y

All Netherite items only require a single ingot and their diamond equivalent tool or armour to craft, so a Netherite pickaxe would be 4 ancient debris, not 12.

Additionally, the tools and weapons do one extra damage when compared to their diamond counterparts, so the sword would be worth it. The rest, not so much. Would probably take the time to make them simply due to them looking cool.75Reply

OneRedTomato·1y

Because the diamond sword does 19 damage to undead with smite 5 it seems that with the netherite sword you could one shot undead mobs17Reply1 more reply

Elowine·1y

A diamond axe with smite 5 already does that so it's not that amazing.

tntexplodes101·1y

Reduced cooldown tho, higher damage per second I'd assume

OneRedTomato·1y

Oh yeah I forgot about axes

SpartaCraft·1y

Here is the crafting recipe [shapeless]. Smelting 1 Ancient Debris yields 1 Netherite Scrap.

4 Scrap per 1 Ingot x 3 Ingots = 12 Scrap.

EDIT: LOL I had no idea it was only 1 Ingot per equipment piece.

soalyer·1y

They're saying you only need one ingot per tool.

here

SpartaCraft·1y

Woah that's neat. I didn't actually check the recipes for the items, I just assumed it was regular crafting recipes like the others. Thanks!

Mehnix·1y

Whole thing totals out to 36 Ancient Debris to upgrade everything, a little more than the 35 diamonds needed prior that that to craft all tools and armour. Could save on that if you don't want to do the now god tier flex of creating a Netherite hoe.

Now he feels stupid

SpartaCraft·1y

No, I'm always up for learning new stuff. I've edited my post.

SpartaCraft·1y

I decided to leave in what I originally said but added a correction. I could've deleted everything and rewrote the whole post but this seems more honest to me. Mostly I just wanted to get information about Netherite out there because it was fairly difficult to find any info about it online up til now just from googling.

mcupdatewanter·1y

Ok

Old_Man_D·1y

It has a higher mining speed, at least officially, and it has better enchantability, and it is also immune to burning in lava if you die.25Reply

SpartaCraft·1y

From my testing, the mining speed is exactly the same as Diamond at all enchantment levels. It is pretty cool that they're immune to burning in lava though.20Reply2 more replies

Old_Man_D·1y

maybe they will take awhile to implement all of this:

  • Netherite tools work faster and last longer than diamond
  • Netherite weapons do more damage than diamond
  • Netherite armor have higher toughness and durability than diamond
  • Netherite armor gives you knockback resistance, so you barely get knocked back at all when hit by arrows and such

SpartaCraft·1y

Currently the only ones that don't work are:

  • Netherite items have higher enchantment value than diamond [but not as high as gold]
  • Netherite tools work faster and last longer than diamond

Everything else seems to work as intended so far.

Firebolt360·1y

Actually, Ive found that by mining obsidian with a diamond and netherite pickaxe, the netherite pickaxe is about 10% faster. Hard to tell without timing something that takes a while to mine

towelcat·1y

Without enchants, it's 12.5% faster. With Eff V, it's 2.94% faster [though this works out to being 0.1s time saved on obsidian, or roughly 10%].

With Eff V Haste II, it only saves 0.05s on obsidian [1.6s -> 1.55s]

Info can be found on the wiki.

Old_Man_D·1y

well, it's only the first snapshot.  It's exciting to me.

ThatRandomIdiot1·1y

INCORRECT it gives 0.35 mining speed unenchanted and diamond gives 0.4 yes it's only 0.05 but its something.

I dont mind that mojang is touching the game progression, but diamonds have always been the strongest and diamonds have sort of been an icon of minecraft in pop culture for a very long time, and now its not like that. I like netherite, but i think it would be better if they had it do a new ingame mechanic, like antigravity or something like that for example instead of making it stronger.

nonononom·1y

Lmao Mojang add an exciting, new element to the game and this guy over here's talking about Minecraft pop culture.

fat255man·1y

Lmaooooo

UniversalHumanRights·1y

a 0.05% pointier stick isn't exactly an "exciting, new element"

TheMysteriousThought·1y

I think a good way to handle new armor or weapon additions would be too add special effects to them, and possibly buff diamond if it's too weak in comparison.

I'd like it if there were several new nether sets, at least a new over world set, and maybe even an end set or two..

Balance it to where each set has different pros or cons or different practical uses..

I'm surprised content additions are as slow as they are.

Blaze_Taleo·1y

That would be a bit rpg like you know what I mean? I feel like minecraft is always treading that line, as they slowly slowly add more and more progession into the game

BlueRiddle·1y

That's kinda how Terraria worked while it still got regular updates. You got the best equipment, and then an update came and added something better. It made the game a fun adventure and actually made you feel like you progressed.

Blaze_Taleo·1y

Yeah but terraria is different because terraria is very much about progression, like an rpg, minecraft has a different focus [building], with rpg elements on the side

BlueRiddle·1y

But it can become both. Adding more stuff for progression does not mean you can't build.

TheMysteriousThought·1y

I understand what you're saying  but feel this  is the  only  logical choice for adding armor and weapon sets in the future.

Unless we just never add anymore.

Blaze_Taleo·1y

Its true, and enchantments seem to slowly be going that way anyways, like frost walker feels totally like a set bonus youd get on an ice set in an rpg you know?

Is netherite in bedrock Edition?

s-s-studder·1y

Nah not for another few months. But i feel ur pain, I've got console to.

AustinHawkins·1y

Is this on console?

OneRedTomato·1y

No, its a snapshot, snapshots are test versions of Minecraft that are made public for people to give feedback. They are only available on pc.

brickpath·1y

The java version of PC and not bedrock

_ThatD0ct0r_·1y

WTF is enchantment value? Is this some hidden value I was never taught? Afaik the enchantment table provides random enchants and takes 1-30 levels [giving better enchants for the more expensive levels respectively]. But what is armor enchantment value?

JavaSurvival·1y

You've got more of a chance to get a better enchantment if I'm not mistaken

ThatRandomIdiot1·1y

Actually, a netherite pickaxe takes 0.35 seconds to mine cobblestone, whereas diamond takes 0.4 seconds to mine cobblestone. Also the added speed AND the added durability makes it very much so worth it to get that sexy netherite. Also, your better off with an enchanted netherite pickaxe in the nether then you are with a diamond one, because it doesnt burn! And you get knockback resistance, so in all honesty, get off of reddit, go get on minecraft and start grinding because the nether update beta is out on bedrock, you just have to join beta using either the Xbox Insider Hub or the Google Play Store on respective devices, I'm not sure on how to get it for bedrock on Windows 10, but I do know that the latest snapshot is also available for Java Edition right now, so go get those updates, get on your survival world and get grinding!

[deleted]·1y

So this actualy like obsidian armor but better

whyonlyTCD·1y

anyone knows how much damage will netherite swords do?

they do now

sadly not... they might change it later... hopefully at least

i feel like it would make more sense to use the anvil, instead of the crafting table, cuz i im working on diamond armour for the ender dragon, but they anounced netherite, so im going to wait, but i enchants on the diamond armour already.

Lord-Fishquaad·1y

yea. i spent like 10-15 minutes mining to get enough for a sword and pickaxe, but that was with beds

amatulic·1y

Netherite durability is actually 1.12x  diamond, not 1.3x, according to the numbers in the Minecraft Wiki.

SpartaCraft·1y

Diamond pick durability: 1561 Netherite pick durability: 2031 1.12x would be 1749.

amatulic·1y

Ah. I was referring to armor durability, which is 1.12X. You may be right about tools.

Baseballfan2021·1y

The tools ar3 actually a tiny bit faster.

Grantly_Buffalo·1y

Ive been mining for hours and I can't find any ancient debris, I've been using beds to create caverns but I can't seem to f iind any debris

dw3lling·1y

I'm trying to debate what i should make with my first netherite

CoolDude420908·1y

Armor set first, then tools

kiel814·1y

The only downside that I see in netherite is about how it looks.

Currently, diamond is not only cool because it is the best protecting gear. It also has a nice [and very distinctive] bright light blue color.

Not only it looks good, but it is also useful. When playing cooperatively, it is easier to spot other players.

Netherite armor woud take that away.

On the other side, if you are playing PvP, it might be easier to sneak up on your enemies.

Edit: Also, there might be people who do not like the diamond color. But I have not heard anyone complain about it yet.

skelatonzomb·1y

what is the best level for mining? like for diamonds it's level 13 is it the same or different

SpartaCraft·1y

Same as Diamond. Level 13, but you will find so little of it it's not worth mining for unless you already have an instamine diamond pickaxe with unbreaking 3.

[deleted]·1y

Its actually pretty easy to get [on switch]

Go to level 15 with iron or better armor.  Take 20 beds, place one, sleep and kaboom everything explodes except for ancient debris [as it does not explode].

Dig another tunnel and do the same

ChillinDYLAN9·1y

I was trying to mine for netherite so I was like at this rate Ill just mine for diamonds...

Gabrielg577·1y

I found it at level 60 is that rare?

Ombric_Shalazar·1y

I think that while incredibly awesome, my netherite gear doesn't have much more durability than my diamond gear, so i had to get them mending. without mending, fixing gear with a whole netherite ingot [so expensive!] is insane. like maybe fixing it with 1 scrap would be fine, but a whole ingot! fixing a diamond weapon with 1 diamond is much more economical, which is why i'm keeping my non-mending equipment as diamond

willcnr09·1y

Is this in the ps4 bedrock version already?

NotGayBobby·1y

Now it is

Sinister_BB·1y

No. Sadly, this wont be released for another few months on bedrock

_beastayyy·1y

Well it's not good for early game of course but when you have hundreds of diamonds why wouldn't you? It's a nice and better upgrade

I don't even spend diamonds anymore, I just trade with villagers for diamond gear.

I still get excited whenever I find diamond ore, though. But I don't use it. I just hoard it.

_beastayyy·1y

Yeaaaahhh true that's awesome

caniplayzz·1y

What are you talking about Netherite doesnt exist

SpartaCraft·1y

Netherite was added in Snapshot 20w06a.  //www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-snapshot-20w06a

caniplayzz·1y

Sorry i didnt do my research

proffessorbiscuit·1y

It's very late game, and does give enchantment bonus

SpartaCraft·1y

I tested it thoroughly with and without enchantments, and enchanting doesn't give it any extra speed over diamond. Could you explain what you mean?

proffessorbiscuit·1y

I honestly dont know, it just said so on the changelog

SpartaCraft·1y

Ah yeah. I tested everything and it seemed like it wasn't quite worth the effort to get unless it had more than just higher durability. The enchantments and speed being better than diamond currently aren't working it seems, but it's intended to be better. Hopefully they get it fixed next snapshot.

Cancerioli·1y

Better enchantability means you get higher enchantments for less levels
