One of the biggest time sinks in the everyday life is the wondering of “what should we eat today…”. Especially when you don’t want to plan the whole week ahead, you end up going to the grocery store many times a week. I only wish there was a system so that you can input recipes, pick the week’s menu from them, and generate a shopping list for the whole week with one button…
I was looking for a system like this for several days, and it all fell apart either because the system couldn’t sum up ingredients from several recipes, or you were stuck with one predefined recipe bank. Because your granny’s recipes are at least as good as those of avocado_lover93, I couldn’t accept a system that doesn’t allow your own recipes.
So, I lost it and decided to do our own Excel for this purpose.
Using it is relatively straightforward:
- Download the excel file in this folder, open it, and allow macros.
- Input names of the recipes and the necessary ingredients on the worksheet “Recipes”. Attention: Include ingredients in the format “amount unit ingredient”, meaning “400 g potatoes” or “1 packet bacon”, so that the list generator understands the amounts. Spaces between terms are critical here!
- Plan your weekly menu by choosing the appropriate weekly menus on the worksheet ”Menuplan” by naming the weeks, and adding included recipes by their name in the columns. A weekly menuplan can include 0-7 recipes.
- Choose the menu plan for the current week on the worksheet “Grocery list” by filling in that menu plan’s name in the cell B2.
- Press “Create grocery list”.
- The grocery list will be automatically generated at the right side of the page!
If you use Wunderlist as a shopping list, as an added bonus you can paste the shopping list to your Wunderlist with this app: //wunderlist-parser.herokuapp.com
If you use Todoist, then you can just copy-paste the shopping list to your app, and it works as it is 🙂
My idea is to have a simple table with weekdays as the x and meals as the y. Id like to be able to go through and add recipes I've enjoyed through out the years. I wanted excel to recognize a recipe inside one of the cells and below the table insert the list of ingredients. Im not very strong in excel but I do have some java background and know this is possible with a simple program, hoping excel would be a little easier for my wife to use. I know excel is a deep rabbit hole with many features. Im not asking for anyone to create this doc just a direction would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is a spreadsheet that contains a template for creating a weekly meal plan. Within the template, you can enter meals and food that you'd like to have on the menu. Within the other tabs exists the food as you've defined it - your recipe, your ingredients. When you click the shopping list button, it finds each item on your meal plan and gathers the ingredients, removes the duplicates, and prints a shopping list. This project grew out of the hassle of planning weekly meals prior to going food shopping. My girlfriend was using the visual template, but filling it out with pencil. I thought it'd be great to have it typed up instead, so I created the template in Excel. Since we're using excel, I thought I would play around with entering her recipes' ingredients into a database that could be accessed to create a shopping list - speeding up the overall food shopping task. - FOOD INVENTORY. I normally wouldn’t worry about keeping a detailed food inventory, however with supermarket shelves practically empty, I’ve found I needed to start tracking what I do and don’t have, not only for creating a grocery list [feels more like a wish list these days..]
- PRE-FILLED GROCERY LIST. I’ve pre-populated this grocery list with more than 220 common items. You can easily add your own grocery items, and delete any I’ve already entered that aren’t relevant to you.
- GROCERY LIST. Same as above only it’s blank so you can build your own grocery list from scratch.
- Price Comparison. Enter the prices for up to 3 shops [grocery items are pre-filled same as the grocery list, but you can delete and add your own as well] and the spreadsheet will automatically highlight which shop is the cheapest for that item, as well as the average price for that item.
