Interview with the vampire book review năm 2024

This is the story of Louis, as told in his own words, of his journey through mortal and immortal life. Louis recounts how he became a vampire at the hands of the radiant and sinister Lestat and how he became indoctrinated, unwillingly, into the vampire way of life. His story ebbs and flows through the streets of New Orleans, defining crucial moments such as his discovery of the exquisite lost young child Claudia, wanting not to hurt but to comfort her with the last breaths of humanity he has inside. Yet, he makes Claudia a vampire, trapping her womanly passion, will, and intelligence inside the body of a small child. Louis and Claudia form a seemingly unbreakable alliance and even “settle down” for a while in the opulent French Quarter. Louis remembers Claudia’s struggle to understand herself and the hatred they both have for Lestat that sends them halfway across the world to seek others of their kind. Louis and Claudia are desperate to find somewhere they belong, to find others who understand, and someone who knows what and why they are.

Louis and Claudia travel Europe, eventually coming to Paris and the ragingly successful Theatre des Vampires–a theatre of vampires pretending to be mortals pretending to be vampires. Here they meet the magnetic and ethereal Armand, who brings them into a whole society of vampires. But Louis and Claudia find that finding others like themselves provides no easy answers and in fact presents dangers they scarcely imagined.

RATING

This was one of my most anticipated reads ever (since I watched the movie a few years ago and I was so drawn to it). However, I was a bit underwhelmed and this let me down a bit. I hate to say this but the movie was soo much better.

Most of you have already either read this or watched the movie and as we all know it tells a story of a vampire Louis, who through an interview, tells us everything about is life. From his childhood, young years to how he turned into a vampire and all the glories and sorrows of his eternal life.

Although Louis turned into a vampire, he was never able to shut down his mortal emotions. That is his biggest weakness and what most think is the cause for his sorrow and emptiness. What other vampires think is a gift, he thinks of it a curse and because of that he will never be able to forgive Lestat for turning him.

Lestat, on the other hand, is totally different. There is a fire to him that drives him to brutally murder and torture everyone he wants. But deep inside him there’s the same exact loneliness and he tries to fight it by controlling everyone around him. Louis included.

Their relationsip was very peculiar to me and I couldn’t decipher it until the very end when I realized it wasn’t really Lestat’s love for Louis, it was his fear of being forever alone. Lestat is cruel and utterly crazy but something draws me to read the next book in this series that is about him.

My problem with this is that the movie was so much better. At some points a book was a bit boring and underwhelming, whereas the movie was thrilling and addictive. Maybe it’s because it’s full of (bisexual?) vampire hotties. Come on, look at them!

My biggest problem with the book is something I couldn’t get over. The character of Claudia who was turned to a vampire as a young child. Although her mind ages, her body doesn’t and that she feels captured inside this shell of a child forever. As sad as the whole situation is, her and Louis’ relationship was extremely concerning and weird to me and I feel like if someone wrote something similar to this today, they would be bashed.

As underwhelming as it all was, I am still drawn to this wole series. Maybe because the characters are so weird and morally grey and maybe because Anne Rice was one of the first authors to write about this sort of topic. And you all know I just can’t get enough of vampires.

Did you read this book and what did you think of it? Let me know. To end this review I want to share my favorite pictures from the movie. Enjoy!

Is Interview with a Vampire a good book?

Her characters are full and engaging, and the way she creates her worlds is breathtaking, too. When I'd say, "I really love this character," she has them do something… show more. From Kay's 3 favorite reads in 2023. Interview with the Vampire is rather dark yet mesmerizing at the same time.

Is Interview with a Vampire book inappropriate?

The characters Lestat, Louis and Claudia are all very loveable, even if they are killers. In my opinion, they are not villains, but antiheroes. There is, however, a lot of gore, killing, sexuality and sexual exploitation. There is also confused, conflicted and distorted morals.

What are the trigger warnings for Interview with the Vampire Anne Rice?

This show covers very sensitive topics like homophobia, racism, domestic violence, murder, etc, so beware and inform yourself about trigger warnings before watching!
