BMW’s hottest-selling compact SUV, the X3, is just a year old since it has received a facelift, and a new generation X3 is already in the making and will possibly launch in 2024 or the beginning of 2025. Our photographers have caught the upcoming fourth-generation X3 prototype near BMW headquarters as they were being loaded onto a trailer.

The current generation of X3 was introduced back in 2017-18, and to match market demand, it was given a facelift by 2022. Nonetheless, with the testing procedure happening, it is clear that the 2023 BMW X3 will see some changes over its 2022 brother before the generation comes to an end in 2024 or 2025.

The regular X3 is powered by the 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo Gasoline engine, powering the rear wheels in the sDrive30i trim, and equipped with an AWD setup in the xDrive30i trim. BMW also offers a couple of M trims for the X3, featuring a 3.0-liter turbo inline-6 engine with different sets of tunes. The X3 mainly competes with the likes of the Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, and Volvo XC60 in the US market.

Spyshots suggest the 2023 X3 will have a more rounded design than its predecessor. The front fascia has been redesigned and you can see the grille has been shrunk in height and widened a bit more to offer a sharper look than its current executive stance. BMW has also added a ridge on the nose of the bonnet, similar to the recently launched XM.

The headlamps don’t seem to see much of a change over the outgoing model. However, a slightly sharper design can be expected. Under the grille, it is very noticeable that BMW has added a bunch of air inlets for better airflow. The bumper has also been redesigned. The corner vents have been relocated to an upper area compared to its predecessor, and the lower portion now comes with a single-slat air inlet setup, abandoning the twin-slat design.

The tail lamps seem to get a major design change at the back. As for the spy shots, you can expect a tinier tail lamp setup with intense LEDs in the upcoming 2023 X3. The roof spoiler is slightly larger in shape than the current one. The current X3 features a bold twin-exhaust setup in the rear bumper. Unlike the current model, the exhaust tips are pushed upwards of the bumper, and it will have an oval design over the past trapezoidal one.

Major changes can only be noticed in the front and rear areas of the upcoming 2023 BMW X3. Other than the abovementioned updates, we expect this BMW to get a new infotainment system for 2023, similar to the one that the iX and now the facelifted 3 series got. This infotainment system features a 14.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen system. This is going to be the last big update for the German family hauler before BMW introduces the new generation X3 based on an improved platform.
