Pros:The RGB keyboard really is sweet.
The screen lid is wrapped in a light weight metal shell that makes it feel solid and protected.
This keyboard separates the arrow keys out from the grid of ordinary keys.
That makes them easier to find by touch than they were on my older Asus laptop.
Cons:All the cons revolve around the peculiar keyboard layout. And the awkward touchpad.
Asus made some strange decisions about the keyboard layout.
There's no indicator light on the NumLock key. And there are no "End" or Page Up/Dn keys.
Home, End, and Page Up/Dn are all available, as secondary functions of some numpad keys.
So, you need to know if NumLock is on or off before you try to navigate through a document.
But, even though this laptop is decked out with dozens of LEDs, Asus couldn't spare one for a NumLock indicator.
Maybe this is an off-base criticism of a gaming laptop. After all, it's not an office workstation.
But, in between gaming sessions, I still try to get some "real, actual work" done sometimes.
Workaround: Install TrayStatus [or similar] for a NumLock indication in the Windows SysTray.
And the touchpad.
It's far less sensitive than the one my previous [circa 2012] Asus laptop.
The Apple-style press-anywhere-to-click feature is badly done. The cursor drifts as you click. It's almost impossible to right-click [actual Apple users don't worry about this] with it.
It routinely takes me 3 tries to bring up a right-click context menu.
But, bonus: sometimes I get accidental right-clicks if my palm touches the "right button" area of the touchpad.
But, it's a gaming laptop. I guess we're all supposed to be using sweet gaming mice instead.
The touchpad is matte black set into the laptop body's matte black finish.
I wish the keyboard lighting highlighted the edges of the touchpad.
As it is, it's impossible to see the touchpad in low-light situations.
It also has a combined "Home/End" key. All the way at the right-end of the function-key row.
It's a Home key. But you can mash Fn-Home to get the End function.
Is anyone ever going to use that feature? I've never seen that before. It's just weird.
Overall Review:Solid build. Decent performance. Good price for the computing power. Looks great.
The pre-installed McAfee software is obnoxious [uninstall it].
Why isn't there an indicator light on the NumLock key? [Get yourself an app like TrayStatus.]
Pros:Booted up fast, and everything seems to but running great so far. Screen, keyboard, and the overall look is top notch.
Cons:When I unboxed the laptop, I was immediately concerned by a rattling sound coming from within the laptop. Before I could even turn it on, I had to remove 10-ish screws, pry off the back panel and see what was going on. Not a great first impression. Turns out there was a loose, tiny silver screw floating around inside. I was able to remove it, but I have no idea where it came from and could not figure out if it fell out from the hardware. Fingers crossed it was just an extra and not something vital to keeping my laptop together.
Overall Review:If nothing goes wrong in the next 6 months, I will attempt to bump up the rating, but as of now I am concerned.
