If the new iPhones are too expensive, or even the premium flagship Huawei smartphones, you should know that there are plenty of good mid-range options out there. Huawei’s nova 3i, for example, is all-around quite impressive despite asking little from your wallet.

A common theme we’re seeing in just about all the premium flagship smartphones this year involves the display notch, more elongated aspect ratio of the display, and photo-taking capabilities centred around AI. The Huawei nova 3i has all of that, but instead of premium prices, brings you a very affordable smartphone that does not compromise on design and looks.

With dimensions measuring 157.6 x 75.2 x 7.6 mm, the Huawei nova 3i is quite thin and compact. The all-glass back is beautiful, though that glossy shine is surely going to attract fingerprints. I have the back colour version for this review, and while it looks good, it’s less striking that the other Iris Purple option which sports a beautiful purple gradient colour underneath the glass back.

The display on the Huawei nova 3i measures 6.3-inches across, with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The IPS LCD panel is very bright and crisp with very vibrant colours.

The Huawei nova 3i supports dual nano-SIM cards. The SIM card tray is on the left of the device. You can put a microSD card in place of the 2nd SIM, if expandable storage is needed.

On the right side, you’ll find the usual volume rocker and power/wake button.

I’m a little disappointed to still see a Micro-USB port on the bottom of the Huawei nova 3i. We should all be using USB Type-C by now. The 3.5 mm audio jack is still present.

On the back, you’ll find the fingerprint scanner. You’ll also see the dual rear camera setup, using a 16 MP f/2.2 sensor with phase-detection auto-focus and a 2 MP depth sensor. The selfie camera on the front also features a dual camera setup, using a 24 MP f/2.0 sensor and a 2 MP depth sensor. That’s a total of four cameras on the Huawei nova 3i.

The AI-powered camera capabilities are quite comprehensive. The camera can recognise over 200 scenes across eight categories. There are numerous shooting modes for AR, portrait, time-lapse, as well as one for full-manual “pro” shooting.

I found the camera is be very capable. In fact, I thought Huawei nova 3i might perhaps be taking the image enhancements a wee bit too far.

Under the hood, the Huawei nova 3i is powered by the company’s own Kirin 710 octa-core processor. This is a 12nm processor comprising 4x Cortex A73 at 2.2 GHz and 4x Cortex A53 at 1.7 GHz. It is accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.

Battery capacity on the Huawei nova 3i is 3,340 mAh.

Geekbench 4 scores for the Huawei nova 3i is as follows:

  • Single-core: 1573
  • Multi-core: 5388
  • Compute: 3947
  • Battery: 2920

The Huawei nova 3i performs comparatively well against other mid-range smartphones. Battery performance, however, seems below par.

For connectivity, the Huawei nova 31 offers 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, GPS with GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Bluetooth 4.2. There is, unfortunately, no NFC.

You’ll get Huawei’s EMUI 8.2.0, built on Android 8.1.

Huawei has a snazzy new GPU Turbo feature which claims to deliver up to 60% improved GPU performance while reducing battery consumption by up to 30%. This update is supposed to be arriving any time now.

Included inside the Huawei nova 3i retail box, you’ll find a USB charger, Micro-USB cable, SIM eject tool, earbud-style headphones, a jelly case, and a screen protector already applied on the device display.

The Huawei nova 3i retails at S$398, available at all Huawei Concept Stores, local telcos and authorised retailers.

Again… They’ve done it again… Huawei announced the Nova 3i a few months ago and the first look showed a stunning blue/purple gradient glass back – a preview that really delivers in person. Much the same as the other phones in the Huawei Nova series, the 3i is priced in the mid-tier but still manages to pack a real punch.

The good

  • Incredibly beautiful all-glass design.
  • Technically powerful beyond its price.
  • The new ‘Phone Clone’ system is next level.

The bad

  • Factory pre-installed apps/games.
  • The camera is an indicator of the low price.

The verdict

For $599, this is just ridiculous… there’s no way Huawei can keep building these brilliant phones for such a low price.

Something I have to note – at this point going back over my Huawei Nova range reviews – they are overwhelmingly positive and significantly less critical than my reviews of most products… but seriously pick one up, play with it and you tell me they’re not absolutely brilliant at the price point.

AESTHETIC

A beautiful new trend in the mid-range Android phone market is to do as Huawei have and really glam up the glass back of the phone. The blue-purple fade beneath the glass never once failed to get a reaction out of those I paraded it around. With the announcement of the new iPhone XR colours, I can’t help but feel as though Apple are behind the mark with phone aesthetics… I mean look at this…

The top notch is done very well and the ports are all relatively standard – demonstrating that you can have a concretely mid-tier phone that still presents incredibly.

PERFORMANCE

I have to drop a few nerdy specs in here to help explain how a $599 phone can perform just as well as anything else on the market. The quad-core Kirin 710 processor at 2.2GHz and equip with a solid 6GB of RAM, the Nova 3i operationally stacks up against phones at double its price point.

Đánh giá huawei nova 3i vnreview năm 2024

Now I’m not going to sit here and try to convince you that this phone will be EXACTLY as powerful or beefy as your latest flagship, but I guarantee that 95% of the population wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the Nova 3i and significantly more expensive phones.

PHONE CLONE

A brand new addition to Huawei phones is ‘Phone Clone’ – an app that comes pre-installed on Huawei phones (I believe starting from the Nova 3i) that allows you to easily transfer all data, text messages, files and apps over from your old phone.

Đánh giá huawei nova 3i vnreview năm 2024

This app changed my life. As a tech writer that changes phones nearly every week, you can imagine how frustrating it is to have to reinstall all of my apps, re-download all my documents and establish all of the correct settings over again. Phone Clone did EVERYTHING for me, the process was smoother than any other phone transfer I’ve done before… Including the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which has a cabled transfer system.

CAMERA

One of the only real identifiers of a mid-tier phone is the camera, and the Nova 3i is no exception to this rule. I’ll spare you the side-by-side comparison photos because the story is the same as it’s always been with phones in this price range – While the 16MP camera handles well-lit scenarios properly, low lighting is the bane of its existence.

Đánh giá huawei nova 3i vnreview năm 2024

For everyday use the camera on the 3i is entirely functional, but it won’t stack up to that of an iPhone or Samsung. Huawei boast the AI tech inside the camera as they do with each new phone, but the marginal difference certainly isn’t anything to write home about.

MISC

A pet peeve of mine and something that frustrated me with the Nova 3i was that it came with pre-installed apps, a lot of which were games. To me that’s just a cheap, outdated gimmick that needs to stop. If you’re buying a mid-range, pure Android phone – you want it to be just that. Adding bloatware that nobody is going to open is frustrating.

The Nova 3i also operates on microUSB, which late in 2018 seems quite dated compared the USB-C standard that the industry is fast adopting.

Đánh giá huawei nova 3i vnreview năm 2024

But other than those two things, this phone is truly exceptional. You can pick up a Huawei Nova 3i at JB Hi-Fi for $599 in either black (please don’t get it in black) or the stunning iris purple seen here.
