Acids. You’ve probably heard of the basic common ones – hyaluronic, citric, salicylic – or they’re probably present in many of your skincare products which you use/have used. Alpha Hydroxy Acids, or more commonly known as AHA, come in different types, derived from fruits, sugar and milk. Which brings me to the hero of the day…Mandelic Acid.

Mandelic acid is a type of AHA derived from the extract of bitter almonds. It is a chemical peel that is anti-aging and helps to shed the dead and drying skin. Mandelic acid helps to fade dark spots and acne scars, suitable even for sensitive skin as it is a gentler AHA than others.

I purchased Dr. Wu’s Intensive Renewal Serum with Mandelic Acid in 18% concentration during one of my trips to Taipei, when I was suffering from the aftermath of the itchy-finger-picking-on-pimples. Dr Wu is a Taiwan medical skin care brand, founded by none other than Dr Ying-Chin Wu, a famous dermatologist with over 40 years of background and experience in cosmetology, and his son Eric Wu. The brand’s R&D standards are based on 5 principles – high grade actives, high concentration, high efficiency, no additives and no alcohol. Their product lines claim to be “skin-friendly, allergy-tested, paraben-free, and deliver clinically proven results for healthy and beautiful skin”.

Dr. Wu’s Intensive Renewal Serum with Mandelic Acid 18% is a serum infused with 18% Mandelic acid, a mild AHA that claims to “refine skin texture, diminish fine lines and improves skin elasticity and firmness.” The serum is complemented with moisture-locking and repairing compounds, giving it its purpose of renewing skin cells and smoothing rough skin texture. It also boasts of a high molecular weight, giving it its watery texture and enabling the serum to be absorbed by skin quicker and better. The high concentration of mandelic acid makes this serum more suitable for normal to oily skin. For the dry and sensitive skin, Dr. Wu’s Intensive Renewal Serum with Mandelic Acid series also has another milder serum formulated to be used daily.

Dr. Wu’s Intensive Renewal Serum with Mandelic Acid 18% is sold in 15ml and 30ml.

Thoughts

Two 30ml bottles in a picture? Go figure. I started off with the smaller 15ml bottle more than 2 years ago and was amazed at its effect on my dull-looking skin after a few weeks of application. I wouldn’t say my acne scars completely disappeared from merely using this, but it definitely faded considerably!

At the beginning, I was mildly aware of the slight icky sensation it left on my face immediately after application. After some digging around on the Web, I realised the trick was to apply the serum, leave it on for about 10min for full absorption, and that icky feeling fades off, leaving my skin ready for the next step in my regime! 2 years on, this serum is now a permanent fixture in my night time regime. I won’t be bold to call it a lifesaver for my dark spots and dull-skin, but it has been extremely effective on my combination, pore-clogging-prone skin. And yes, I will repurchase as soon as my spare 30ml bottle finishes.
