Princeton Review compiled a list of the top 10 best college majors based on research covering job prospects, alumni salaries and popularity.

“That doesn’t mean every course of study listed here will guarantee you a job, or a huge paycheck -- but each of these majors does offer unique intellectual challenges and will help you develop skill sets that will be applicable in a variety of professional positions,” according to Princeton Review.

Here’s a look at the top 10 college majors.

10. Biology

Biology majors can study humans, plants, animals and the environment, and studies are conducted at the cellular level, the ecosystem level or anywhere in between. Students might find themselves in medical school, or one of the many growing fields such as genetics and biotechnology, or working as a veterinarian, optometrist, ecologist or environmentalist.

9. Chemical engineering

Chemical engineering majors learn how to reorganize the structure of molecules and how to design chemical processes through which chemicals, petroleum, foods and pharmaceuticals can undergo. It is a broad field that overlaps with other branches of engineering, chemistry and biochemistry.

8. Nursing

Nursing majors take the traditional science and liberal arts courses as a first-year student, and begin clinical rotations at hospitals and other health care facilities during the second semester of their sophomore year.

Certification exams are required after graduation from an accredited nursing program before a student can be officially registered. Job prospects are varied, including fields like geriatrics, neurology, oncology, obstetrics and pediatrics.

7. Psychology

Psychology majors focus on features of the human mind such as learning, cognition, intelligence, motivation, emotion, perception, personality, mental disorders and the way our individual preferences are inherited from our parents or shaped by our environment. This degree can set you up for jobs like a therapist, counselor, teacher, child development specialist, lawyer or consultant.

6. English Language and Literature

English programs focus on literature, language and writing, and English majors encounter a wide array of fiction, poetry and nonfiction from around the world and throughout history. This degree prepares for a future in law, journalism, publishing, and graduate studies.

5. Economics

Economics studies choices of individuals, businesses, governments and societies, and how they choose to spend their time and money, and allocate their resources. It generally prepares students for a future in business, as well as graduate studies in law, public policy and international studies.

4. Business

Business majors study theories and principles of accounting, finance, marketing, economics, statistics and human resources.

3. Government/Political Science

Political science majors study American government, public policy, foreign affairs, political philosophy and comparative government. Future careers include lawyers, politicians and journalists.

2. Communications

Communication majors learn about verbal and nonverbal messages, audience reactions and the varied effects of different communication environments. Majors can choose from career options in business, advertising, human resources, public relations, government, education, media and social services.

Computer science majors are exposed to areas like robotics, natural language recognition programs, artificial intelligence, programming languages, numerical analysis and gaming technology.
