Which do you prefer? Does anyone have both? Would be interested to hear your take on these two lenses. I've been holding out for a 135 f/1.8 but don't want to wait another year.

Milkier bokeh.

I really think it's in the eye of the beholder though. For some, the 85mm is perfect. Maybe you don't want to eliminate ALL your background, etc.

135 has better separation. Bought Batis 135 recently and it delivers very nice portrait IQ. Another reason is relative compact and light.

For 85mm however I will wait to see Sigma 85/1.4 Art e-mount that likely be announced in one year. I'd like a faster 85mm prime before more separation and bokeh. Will choose among 85 GM and future e-mount Sigma 85/1.4.

If you can stretch your finances just a little further pick up the f1.4 Sony 85mm GM lens.

I got one recently and I am totally blown away by it, The Batis is a great lens for sure but the G Master sharpness, bokeh and separation just blows it away.

Check out the numerous YouTube head to head comparisons.

I've already got the Batis85 and am pretty happy with it for that focal length. I travel a lot so I'm really looking for a three-lens combination that I can take with me in a small sling-bag. My other two lenses are 16-35 f/4 and Nikon 300 f/4. The zoom works fine for street photos bit the 85 is a bit short for candids.

I sold my 85 when I got the 85GM, it is a good lens but not at good as the GM and I didn't want two.

The Batis 135 I feel is one of the sharpest e-mount lenses there is and others have said same. I have heard some say the Batis 135 and Voigtlander 65 may be two of the sharpest emount lenses there is. Not sure I would go that far the 50 1.4, 90 macro and 100 STF are awfully good.

It is also small and lightweight at only 20.9 oz it is the only lens I own that is lighter is the 12-24 at 19.9 oz.

The Batis 85mm does produce some strange double bokeh in some conditions, especially with foreground bokeh. The 135mm seems to not have this issue.

The focal lengths are so different, that I can not think in the lenses in terms "one or the other".

Some examples with the B135, from Malyasian photog Yudi:

http://lenspire.zeiss.com/en/travel-photography/

The 135 focal allows photogs to be more distanced from their subject, complementing up closer shots.

If I were shooting portraits, I would choose based on available room space to manoeuvre backwards, and on the type of perspective I was after.

Re: Batis 85 vs 135

135mm is better than 85mm for headshots due to perspective. You can take headsots with a 85mm at minimal distance, but you will slightly deform the face of your model.

Re: Batis 85 vs 135

Just purchased the Batis 135 and should have it next week. I love my other 3 Batis lenses and the fact that the ergonomics are the same. I like that Zeiss' lenses have strong family traits and are consistent across the family.

I got lucky and Zeiss allowed the $300 discount to come back. Its a very expensive lens and I hope I won't regret the purchase. Love 135mm and have the 70-200 f/4 but really didn't want to upgrade to the GM f/2.8 due to its size. Maybe I will do that when I sell my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II but for now I will adapt that and carry the Batis 135 all the time..

I do have the Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L and it does adapt better now with the A7RIII but but the native AF, OIS, and lower price pushed me over the edge. I will know next week if I made a good decision. Will report back.

Re: Batis 85 vs 135

Few seem interested in having both.

I have been a predominantly zoom user, but want to spend more time with primes.

Have the 90mm macro and batis 135mm but was considering the batis 85mm as well, as a lighter alternative to the 90mm.

My other primes are 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8.

Reckon it's a bit pointless going from 55mm to 85mm?

With Canon I have used both 85mm and 135mm. If you can afford both I recommend keeping both. I pretty much use 85 inside and the 135 for outdoor shooting since more space is needed. That is typically why the 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom is so flexible but I Iike the lighter feel of the primes.
