Also starring Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, and Colin Farrell as Penguin, The Batman features an onslaught of incredible acting talent.

May December (2023)

Since his early days in the 1990s, Todd Haynes has thrived as one of the sung heroes of independent cinema, with films like Safe and Far From Heaven earning the respect of critics, and films like Velvet Goldmine and I’m Not There earning Academy Award nominations. And his success continued to this past decade with films like Carol. So fans of Haynes are undoubtedly excited for May December, whose trailer promises an intensely intimate look at a tabloid romance. The film features Academy Award winner Natalie Portman as an actress, Elizabeth, who is researching her role by visiting the character at the center of her film: a woman who met her husband when she was 36 and he was just 13. Julianne Moore (also an Academy Award winner) stars as the woman, Gracei, while Charles Melton delivers a breakout role as the young man, Joe.

Good Boys (2019)

I was so excited to see Good Boys back when it came out in 2019. It appeared to have Superbad vibes, albeit with a much younger cast at its center. And while it didn’t quite reach the heights of that comedic classic (a tall order, truth be told), Good Boys delivered to become one of the great school-bound comedies of the past ten years. The film stars Jacob Tremblay (who also had leading roles in Room and Luca) as Max, a boy who gets invited to his first “kissing party.” After panicking, he enlists his two best friends—Lucas (played by Keith L Williams) and Thor (played by Brady Noon)—to help him out. Obviously, shenanigans and mix-ups ensue as zany characters flood the junior highers lives.

Insidious (2010)

James Wan has become one of the premiere blockbuster directors in cinema, with films like Aquaman and Furious 7 breaking the box office and horror flicks like Malignant delivering one of the most memorable twists in recent memory. But his really started with the Saw series, followed by what might actually be his best film to date: Insidious. Featuring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as concerned parents who take drastic measures when they suspect their new home is haunted—and that their son is possessed by a demon. Wan’s signature style finally finds its footing in this horror film that feels fresh and scary even 13 years later.

Wonder Woman (2017)

The DCEU has certainly seen its fair share of ups and downs over the past ten-or-so years—mostly downs, as most superhero fans would tell you. But there have been a few agreed-upon high points in DC’s quest to compete with Marvel, and one of those has to be Wonder Woman. The film earned a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed over $800 million worldwide in the film that made Gal Gadot one of the elite actresses in Hollywood. This origin story follows Woman Woman as she graduates from princess of the Amazons to unstoppable warrior who protects the world from great evil in the midst of a world war.

Boyz n the Hood (1991)

The death of John Singleton was one of the great losses Hollywood experienced in the 2010s. The man made several classics focused on Black lives in America, including Poetic Justice and the unforgivably underrated Baby Boy. But it all started back in 1991 with Boyz n the Hood, an uncompromising look at gang culture in South Central Los Angeles. Starring incredible 90s stars such as Cuba Gooding Jr., Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long—okay, I’ll stop there before the list gets too long—this revered hood film feels just as relevant and poignant today as it did over 30 years ago.

Black Swan (2010)

Sometimes the experience of first watching a film is so visceral and enchanting that I cannot shake it from my memory. And that is the case with Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, which I saw in theaters back in 2010 and haven’t forgotten since. I watch the films every couple years and it always holds up. Starring Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers, a ballerina who loses her mind trying to play both the White and Black Swan in the ballet Swan Lake, this vibrant horror/mystery constantly toys with reality and perception in order to explore the fragile state of the human mind. Also starring Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, and Winona Ryder, this Academy Award winning nod to the classic anime film Perfect Blue will forever remain an enthralling watch.

Shazam! (2019)

In a world where superhero movies have started to feel predictable and commonplace, a movie like Shazam! truly stands out. Starring Zachary Levi (of the cult television series Chuck) as Captain Marvel, this outrageous blockbuster is just as much a comedy as it is an action flick. Balanced out with strong actors like Mark Strong and Djimon Hounsou as well as an all-star cast of teen actors, this fun and self-aware film focuses on 14-year-old Billy Baston as he transforms into an adult superhero named Shazam. He must learn how to balance his newfound power to save the world with living a teenaged life.

Lucy (2014)

Luc Besson doesn’t need his record defended. After all, the man directed beloved films like Léon: The Professional and The Fifth Element. But the ever-stylish director who makes movies that feel like no others...well, he’s produced some under-appreciated films over the years, including Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Anna, and, yes, Lucy. That final movie may have received the most criminal bashing from critics, who largely failed to recognize the film’s dynamic commentary on the human condition and dismissed the film as a silly escapade. But Besson’s take on the superhero genre (the film stars Scarlet Johansson as a woman who gains telekinetic abilities) has found a cult audience over the years, as more and more people have recognized the deeper ideas a play.
