Deviant or misbehavior is the improper conduct of an employee towards the company rules, and values. There are different type of misbehavior, the misbehavior that benefits oneself, the one that benefits the organization and the one that tends to affect or damage the organization. There are four categories that deviant or misbehavior can be classified; production deviance, political deviance, property deviance, and personal aggression.

Production Deviance; it refers when individual intentionally wants to cause harm to the production of the company working for, it is a voluntary behavior that goes against the values of the company. Personal aggression; it is refers to the personal behavior of an employee by using verbal aggression, and sexual harassment. Sometimes, employees are the reflection of manager; for example, if a manager uses bad words when talking, then the employees will use them too because they will think it is normal. Managers have to show a strong moral personality, so employees as well show respect to each other, it is also important than managers constantly remember to the employees the moral values of the company.

I personally have not experienced myself any of the misbehavior actions mentioned before; however, I seen them around me. For example, I got to see when employees use the company equipment for personal use, or employees’ job time to do personal activities; like pay bills online, use the company phone for personal calls, etc. I have also been in an environment of people gossiping about others, however, I prefer not to listen, so I don’t get involve into those problems. Workplace deviance refers to deliberate, malicious attempts to sabotage an organisation by causing problems in the workplace. It’s normally split into two spheres: interpersonal deviance, which attempts to sabotage relationships through activities like gossiping, lying and apportioning blame, and organisational deviance, such as lateness or theft of equipment.

Employee silence is seen by some as workplace deviance although the boundaries are unclear – silence that is purposefully designed to harm the organisation may be considered deviant, although it’s important to consider the reasons behind the silence as to whether it’s malicious or not.

The psychological contract is an important part of whether workers engage in workplace deviance. Research suggests that employees form a psychological contract with their employer based on their expectations of the workplace and the job. If the worker believes they have been treated unfairly or that the employer is not meeting their expectations, they may perceive the employer to have breached the contract. This perception of mistreatment can drive workplace deviance.

As with many forms of negative workplace behaviours, ensuring organisational justice is one of the most effective methods organisations can use to reduce the incident of deviance, although this will be less effective when the deviance is driven by factors unrelated to the worker’s professional life, such as personality or stress in the personal sphere.
