What iPhone will come out in 2023

Apple will launch its new iPhone 14 family of smartphones in a few month's time, but the next-gen iPhone 15 family of handsets is now being teased -- without a foldable iPhone teased -- for 2023.

What iPhone will come out in 2023

The new Apple iPhone 15 range of smartphones will have a dual hole punch design on the iPhone Pro models on "all 4 models in 2023" according to DSCC CEO Ross Young. Young added that he hopes "the holes will get smaller..." meaning the notch will disappear from the iPhone.

Apple will most likely unveil under-display FaceID technology with the iPhone 15, putting the camera behind the screen like some of its competitors -- Samsung for example, and their Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy S21/22 series smartphones -- and leaving the world of the notch + iPhone forever, hopefully.

The iPhone 15 isn't expected until late 2023, but we already have rumors coming in about possible hardware changes. We could see the transition to USB-C, the return of Touch ID, two models with no physical buttons, a periscope lens camera, Dynamic Island for all models, and a titanium iPhone Ultra.

When Will the iPhone 15 Be Released?

Apple sticks to a pretty firm schedule. Following the 2022 iPhone 14 launch, the likely timeline is the iPhone 15 in 2023, and then the iPhone Flip/Fold in 2025.

Rumors are pointing to a few models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Max, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. We've also heard other naming schemes like iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Ultra. Nobody's sure just yet.

Lifewire's Release Date Estimate

After several iPhone launches, it's clear that Apple likes to release its new phones in the fall. Since Apple just released the iPhone 14 lineup in 2022, watch for the iPhone 15 in September 2023.

iPhone 15 Price Rumors

A price estimate this early won’t be accurate. But here's an idea (again, we're guessing these names):

  • iPhone 15: $799
  • iPhone 15 Plus: $999
  • iPhone 15 Pro: $1099
  • iPhone 15 Ultra: $1299

For reference, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the high-end model in the 2022 lineup, started at $1,099.

If the rumor is true that the Ultra model will have a titanium chassis (versus stainless steel), it'll no doubt drive its price even higher.

The entire pricing model could change, however, if Apple starts selling the iPhone as a subscription service, which is rumored to start happening the same year the iPhone 15 is scheduled to arrive.

Pre-Order Information

You'll be able to pre-order the iPhone from Apple's website, likely the same day it's announced or shortly after. We'll have the exact details during the Apple event that year; monitor our Next Apple Event page for more information.

iPhone 15 Features

New versions of the iPhone operating system follow a similar year-after-year schedule as the iPhone. This means iOS 17 will be here by the time iPhone 15 launches. Although the number sequencing is pretty straightforward, the actual features that this OS will bring are still entirely unknown at this point.

The History of iOS, from Version 1.0 to 16.0

There's still a lot of time from now until late 2023, so expect more details to edge their way in as we get closer to the release. We'll keep this page updated in line with those rumors and leaks.

iPhone 15 Specs and Hardware

Despite this phone being many months out from a release, a few details from leakers and analysts point to what we will likely see in terms of iPhone 15 specs.

Beginning in 2017, Apple transitioned away from Touch ID, opting instead for Face ID. But that could change with the iPhone 15. A name you're probably familiar with, if you follow Apple-related leaks, is Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst has said the 2023 iPhone will get an in-screen Touch ID—since that release year corresponds to the iPhone 15, it's safe to say if this is accurate, Touch ID will return to the iPhone 15, and it will be built-in under the display (Apple even won a patent for an under-display biometrics sensor).

However, a later report, also from Kuo, conflicts with his earlier prediction:

We won't know for a while the screen size of the iPhone 15, but Kuo points to 2024 as the year Apple comes out with a "real full-screen iPhone," and a lineup that adopts an under-display front camera and under-display Face ID. The 2023 iPhone 15 lineup might include two sizes: the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Ross Young makes predictions about the next several iPhone releases, in terms of under-panel hardware. The iPhone 15 will presumably have a pill-and-hole instead of a notch, like the 2022 Pro models. The Dynamic Island that made the news with the iPhone 14 is said to be coming to the iPhone 15, too, but this time to all models, not just the iPhone Pro.

Another significant change we could see is an all-wireless iPhone. In late 2021, the European Commission proposed USB-C as the go-to port for smartphones, and then in mid-2022 solidified the decision. European lawmakers will make it mandatory starting in 2024, meaning Apple will need to do away with the Lightning connector that's been the standard on iPhones.

This change wouldn't be groundbreaking considering Macs and most iPads have them, but it could be what pushes Apple to make the iPhone completely wireless. Or, maybe they'll stick to USB-C (though, maybe for only part of the lineup). Only time will tell how this pans out.

Why USB-C iPhones Could Help Make Your Life Easier

Something else we've heard regarding the under-display tech is a front-facing camera. Chances are this won't arrive until Apple perfects under-display Face ID, but maybe they'll hit both the same year: in-screen camera and Face ID.

One or more models will reportedly have a 12MP periscope lens, and this source says it'll also have 5–6x optical zoom. Analyst Jeff Pu predicts that one of the models will feature a periscope camera capable of up to 10x optical zoom. Clearly, nobody knows for sure.

Another rumor is that the iPhone 15 Ultra will have a dual-lens selfie camera. If true, it would make sense for this to come to only the Ultra model, if Apple wants there to be a big divide between it and the other models. That same tipster reports that the Ultra's storage will start at 256 GB, while the Pro will start at 128 GB.

According to one Apple leaker, the iPhone 15 will come with the A16 chip, while the 15 Pro will come with the A17. The same source, LeaksApplePro, says that Apple is working on 8K recording and that it could be reserved for just the iPhone Ultra. The same model is also said to be made out of titanium.

We might also have an early report on this phone's memory capacity. This is from industry research brand TrendForce (spotted by FrontPageTech):

...chances are high that the Pro series will feature a memory capacity upgrade to 8GB to match its new processor...

Finally, the iPhone 15 could be the first iPhone to completely remove all physical control buttons, at least according to patents and predictions. Apple could achieve this by creating a touch sensor layer along the edge of the device.

Here's a neat concept of the iPhone 15 Pro that utilizes some of those ideas, like in-screen Face ID and Touch ID. There's also an Apple Watch-like display over the back-facing camera housing that provides at-a-glance information and controls for music and calls.
