Mazda’s recent introduction of the all-new 2023 CX-50, an SUV similar in size to the compact CX-5 but better prepared for mild off-roading, sparked rumors that it would replace the CX-5 just as the CX-30 ousted the CX-3. The automaker claims its bestselling model is sticking around, however, and for now, it’s keeping its word: The CX-5 returns for 2023 unchanged apart from a new paint color and mostly minor pricing updates. PowertrainsThe 2023 CX-5 will once again offer the choice of two powertrains: a base 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic transmission for up to 187 horsepower and 186 pounds-feet of torque or a turbocharged version that boosts output up to 227 hp and 310 pounds-feet of torque on regular fuel or 256 hp and 320 pounds-feet using premium. Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive is again standard for all models. Tech and SafetyAll CX-5 variants come with a standard 10.25-inch center display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. What the system lacks is touchscreen capability: A console knob controller is the only way to navigate the Mazda Connect system, which we’ve found frustrating to use. Standard safety features for all trims include adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert; traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera system and a head-up display are optional. The CX-5 earned a 2022 Top Safety Pick Plus award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and was the only small SUV to score a good rating in the agency’s updated crash test. Trims, Pricing and Release Date 2022 Mazda CX-5 | Manufacturer image 2.5 S: $27,975 (up $500) Eight trims will be offered for the 2023 CX-5, which will go on sale in the fall. The only way to distinguish the 2023 model from the 2022 paint-wise is a new Rhodium White color that joins Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Machine Gray as a premium option; all carry a $595 price premium. The base 2.5 S model starts at $27,975 (all prices include a $1,275 destination fee), up $500 from the 2022 CX-5’s starting price. There’s good news for shoppers considering the Carbon Edition or the Premium trims, however — these models see prices fall compared to 2022. While the Carbon Edition returns unchanged, shoppers should note the Premium will no longer offer an upgraded Bose 10-speaker sound system, which now comes standard with the Premium Plus. Additional standard features include automatic LED headlights and taillights, keyless entry and push-button start, a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel, two front USB ports, and cloth upholstery. The S Select adds dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, a power adjustable driver’s seat and an upgraded six-speaker sound system. Rear passengers gain air conditioning vents, two USB ports and a center armrest. Going with the Preferred trim adds a standard power moonroof, auto-dimming rearview mirrors and genuine leather seats. The CX-5’s Carbon Edition, introduced in 2021, returns for 2023 carrying a price cut year over year. In addition to trim-specific paint, it gets 19-inch alloy wheels and black leather seats with red stitching or red leather inside. The Premium model is also less expensive for 2023; it adds Mazda’s Mi-Drive Intelligent Drive Select system with three drive modes: Normal, Off-Road and Sport. It gets standard LED daytime running lights and combination taillights, adaptive front lighting, and a 7-inch LCD gauge cluster. Upgrading to the Premium Plus adds a full-color head-up display, ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. A premium Bose 10-speaker audio system and a power rear liftgate are standard In addition to housing the more powerful turbo engine, the 2.5 Turbo gets gloss-black exterior trim, black 19-inch alloy wheels and sportier trim inside. Wireless charging comes standard. The range-topping Turbo Signature stands out visually with body-color cladding, silver 19-inch alloy wheels, and Nappa leather and genuine wood trim inside. It’s also the only trim that offers Mazda’s extended list of safety features as standard, including a 360-degree camera system with parking sensors, a driver alertness monitor, and low-speed rear emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The 2.5 Turbo Signature also comes with standard built-in navigation and ambient interior lighting. Versus the CompetitionThe Mazda CX-5 competes in a crowded field of compact SUVs, including the Honda CR-V, which gets significant updates for 2023. Other rivals include the Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV-4 and the CX-5’s new stablemate, the 2023 CX-50. The CX-5’s starting price is competitive in the class: Pricing for the refreshed 2023 CR-V has not been announced, but it will likely climb from the 2022 model’s $28,045. What is the difference between 2022 and 2023 CXThis new model year is not a new generation for the CX-5. It carries over almost unchanged from 2022. The big change for the year is the addition of a premium color. Rhodium White will be added to the lineup.
