Unable to Copy and Paste to and from remote desktop connection on some servers.

Unable to Copy and Paste to and from the remote desktop connections on some servers. None of the file types are working. I tried folder copy, text file copy, word, excel, .exe file copy. none of those work. Interestingly, copy-paste of text to and from works.

Client OS is Windows 10.
Remote Desktop Server OS is Windows server 2016.

Troubleshooting did so far:
1) Killed rdpclip.exe and tested. No luck
2) Rebooted the server and the client. No luck
3) Added rdpclip.exe to exclusions in Antivirus. No luck
4) Removed Antivirus and tested. No luck.
5) Tried local login to the remote desktop server instead of domain login. No luck
6) Verified in the group policy and made sure Do not allow Clipboard redirection and
Do not allow drive redirection are set to not configured.
7) Replaced the rdpclip.exe from a working server. No luck.
8) Compared local security policies (secpol.msc) with a working server and replicated the same settings on the non-working server. Rebooted after that. No luck.
9) Tried disabling all the Group Policies that are pushed through Domain Controller. No luck.

Any suggestions as to what more we can do to identify and fix the issue?

Hi, dear

It's highly recommended you use Drive Redirection through Remote Desktop Services if you want to transfer files.

Firstly, run command with Mstsc.exe. When the Remote Desktop Connection window appears, click the Show Options button at the bottom left of the window.
On the Local Resources tab of Remote Desktop Connection, you can specify which kinds of devices and resources that they want to redirect to the remote computer. Now that drives on the local computer can be redirected in the session so that files can easily be transferred between the local computer and the remote computer.

In the meanwhile, you can edit client drive redirection by configuring a Microsoft Remote Desktop Services group policy setting for remote desktops and RDS hosts.
Run command with gpedit.msc. In the Group Policy Editor, go to Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection.

Secondly, you should check the rdpclip.exe on your remote computer with Task Manager to see if it is processing well. Cause Remote Desktop Clipboard is a Windows utility that allows users to manage a shared clipboard between a local host and remote desktop. This application runs on the remote PC and not on your local host.

Run command with taskmgr.exe - Go to the Processes Tab - Select rdpclip.exe - Click End task

Go to the File tab - Click Run new task - Type rdpclip.exe - Click Ok

restarting rdpclip.exe on the remote server solved my issue

I ran into the same issue. In Remote Desktop Connection/Show Options/Local Resources tab, uncheck Clipboard; check Clipboard, and re-connect helped resolving the issue.

Same problem, Windows 10 client and server is Windows 2019. None of the client or server side methods above solve the problem to reset it.

What causes it to stop working is when I copy a large amount of text across the RDP connection, ie 500-1000+ rows (exact number not yet determined). The clipboard stills functions on client/server independently but no longer across the connection.

Anyone got a resolution to this?

I've got the exact same problem as Akshay, tried the same things to no avail.
Can even copy text to / from the server but no files.

For reference this issue is only happening on my session hosts - other RDS server that has connection broker / session host on it doesn't have this issue.
Issue persists when connecting to the problem session host via connection broker and directly with 'mstsc.exe /admin'.

Further investigation appreciated @Jingruihan-MSFT

Did you make any headway on this? I believe our symptoms are the same on Windows 10 Multisession 20H2 session host.

I am having this issue and have tried everything in this post - the RDC already had Clipboard checked. I have rebooted the server, the laptop that I am using RDP on. Still unable to copy and p paste from the Event Viewer. I can't even copy and paste to Notepad on the same server with NO RDP.

This is ridiculous - with a Mac you can copy and past from any dialog box that pops up. Why on earth desert Microsoft allow this on all their products and OS? Makes life so much easier and saves a ton of time for the administrator.

Microsoft needs to think about how their customer use the event viewer log.

Copy Paste dosen't work in server 2019

Hello,

I'm having issues with the copy paste function in server 2019.
The paste option is grayed out when attempting to copy files from local pc to the Terminal.
It is possible copying text.
I've tried all the solutions found on google;
Group policy changes (disabled the option to block copy)
Changed the RDP settings to allow copy (and drives).
Ctrl C + Ctrl V.
Restarting rdclip.exe process.
Restarting the server.
And a few more options.

Would greatly appreciate any further help.

Did you end up finding a solution to this issue? I'm having a very similar issue in Windows 2012R2.
We have over 20 RD session hosts that can copy/paste fine but 3 newly created ones have the Paste option greyed out for files.
Copy and pasting locally works fine. Copying and pasting text works fine. Just copy/pasting files isn't working.

Standard GPO checks, etc. And all servers are in the same OU and getting the same GPOs. Just the latest 3 out of 28 are not working.

You have provisioned CIS hardened image from Azure marketplace?

You can copy text from local PC to terminal system, only file can't copy if it is hardened image.

Previously i have same issue i done changes in GPO then it is working.

Do not allow Clipboard redirection
This policy setting specifies whether to prevent the sharing of Clipboard contents (Clipboard redirection) between a remote computer and a client computer during a Remote Desktop Services session.

You can use this setting to prevent users from redirecting Clipboard data to and from the remote computer and the local computer. By default, Remote Desktop Services allows Clipboard redirection.

If you enable this policy setting, users cannot redirect Clipboard data.

If you disable this policy setting, Remote Desktop Services always allows Clipboard redirection.

If you do not configure this policy setting, Clipboard redirection is not specified at the Group Policy level.

1.Is the machine domain joint?
Kindly check the gpresult and ensure that both clipboard and drive redirection policy are enabled.

2.What kind of client you've used to start the remote connection? If possible, please also try the windows built-in command: mstsc to start the remote session and check the option of Drive and clipboard redirection.

3.Please check the properties of folder in the target location and ensure that the remote user has capability to write.

4.What is the size of the file you would like to move? Is this a common issue for all files or only for large files?

RDP Clipboard (Rdpclip.exe) Stops Working in Remote Desktop Session

If the clipboard in RDP session has stopped working unexpectedly, and Paste option in the context menu has become inactive, it is easier to end the current RDP session correctly (logoff) and re-connect. This will fix the Remote Desktop clipboard issue for sure. However, it is not always convenient, because you have to re-open all apps in your RDP session again. Fortunately, there is a way to restore correct clipboard operation in a RDP session without logging off.

Rdpclip.exe is responsible for clipboard operation between your local computer and the Remote Desktop host. A separate rdpclip.exe process is started for each remote user session when they connect to the Remote Desktop. Using the Task Manager, you can kill the rdpclip.exe (RDP Clipboard Monitor) process and run it manually (Task Manager -> File -> Start new task -> rdpclip -> Enter).

Usually it helps to restore the remote clipboard operation quickly. Make sure if copy/paste (Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V) is working in the RDP session.

Users can restart the rdpclip.exe process if it has hung up using a simple PowerShell script. It is enough to place the PS1 file on the Public profile Desktop folder or copy it to user desktops using GPO.

To make it more convenient to use, you can sign the PowerShell script or configure a PowerShell Execution Policy.

Remember that in order to copy data via the RDP clipboard, the following conditions must be met:

1. The remote clipboard must be enabled in the settings of the RDP client you are using to connect to a remote computer. Check Clipboard in the Choose the devices and resources that you want to use in your remote session section in the Local Resources tab of the built-in mstsc.execlient;
   

   If you are using an alternative RDP client, like the Remote Desktop Connection Manager (RDCMan) or mRemoteNG, note that the remote clipboard option may be called differently.

2. Copying and pasting data using the clipboard must also be allowed on the RDP/RDS host (see below for how to do this).

So they can copy and paste text back and forth, but they can't actually do that with a file?

What does it say or do when they go to paste a copied file (or drag and drop) into the remote window?

When dragging a file it will not leave the screen and drag over to the computer. It gets stuck on the border of the remote desktop session window. Dragging on to the remote session just gives me the standard no action icon of the O with the line through it. Right clickingand attempting to copy paste the file results in a greyed out paste option. This is happening with an admin account also.

Now if you dont want the users to actually see their redirected drives (which you probably should) set this on the collection of the RDSH on the broker:

Steps to Fix the error that cannot be copied and pasted into the Remote Desktop session

Some users have particular problems when copying and pasting files from the local computer into a Remote Desktop session. They can still copy paste locally, but the option to paste will be grayed out on the Remote Desktop computer.
