What should my CPU and GPU usage be when gaming

I have an i5 6600k, R9 390 and 16GB RAM.

When running the game, my GPU usage is at a constant 100%, be that in menu's, the firing range, or any map.

My FPS can fluctuate between slightly above 60 indoors down to around 40 and maybe a tad lower for most of the game out in the open.

My CPU usage almost never exceeds 50% on all 4 cores.

This is at 1080p, and mostly high/epic settings with shadows down to medium. The other settings don't seem to affect the FPS much at all that I can see, other than in smoke/firefights.

Does this sound right? Should my GPU be at such high usage, CPU such low usage, fps be around that?Read More

Your GPU will push the FPS as high as possible, hence why it's always at 100% usage.

Your CPU will probably never hit 100% usage in any game because games usually don't need that amount of processing power.

If your GPU is not hitting 100% usage that's because there's some sort of FPS cap or bottleneck somewhere. In other words, you're fine.2Reply

Hmm, I have the same hardware but never hit 100% GPU. I play at 1440p and get between 40-60 fps depending on how many players are on the server. My CPU usage is about the same though.1Reply

Same here.  I have a 980ti and it barely goes over 50-60% load.  My CPU seems to be fully utilized though.  1Reply

I'm beginning to think somethings up with my GPU. Going to do some benchmark tests later and compare them to others to see if something really is up.

Odd that you don't hit 100% on anything though. Surely something has to be at 100%, or are you capping the frame rate?

Yeah when I get drops below 60 on large servers I am probably maxing something. I have only monitored my gpu and cpu while in the test range so I was always maxed at 60 fps. I will get some numbers while in a 72 player match later today. 2 more replies

Thats effectively where you want it at first look.  This would tell me your CPU is able to effectively pass on enough for your GPU to work at 100%.  If your CPU was at 70%+ and yoru GPU was at like 50-60 or so and you were still getting bad performance, would tell me your CPU was bottlenecking.  Your premonition is effectively correct.  This games pretty single threaded with AMD GPU's, I haven't been able to see anyone provide screenshots of their CPU utilization while running this game with an Nvidia GPU.

As a side note if you want to try some of these to see if it helps your FPS feel free.

i got a i7 6700k and my cpu is around 40% and my gpu at 100% (980Ti) 1440p and i got around 75-80 in 72p maps1Reply

Means that your GPU is limiting your frames per second, which is something you always want to have. 1Reply

My cpu(i7 970 at 3.2ghz) runs 20% usage and gfx 40% usage (690, technically 2 gpus and each runs between 30-60% while playing, but average around 40%). Used to get 50 fps on medium now i can get about 30 on lowest settings and less than 100% resolution settings (tested it out today on OP first light, 50% res settings and only hit about 32 fps, when turning about 25). So you can say I'm slightly disappointed and discouraged to play.

Hmm check your GPU clock speed. I was having an issue with my card where it was always locked at 300 mHz at all times, and never went above that. I tried absolutely everything to get it to work. After a few weeks of trying absolutely every piece of advice I could get, I simply reinstalled windows and everything has been working normally since then.

I'm the opposite with the same processor (GTX 970 & 6600k), GPU usage goes to around 50-60% during 72 man, but CPU is cranking 100%. I'm overclocked to 4.5Ghz as well.
