“I’ve never done something like this,” US coach Jim Boylen said.

“And that’s what we’ve told these guys. This group of guys, they chose to play these two games, on the road, in what I call enemy territory. And they decided to spend the Fourth of July, in Havana, when they didn’t have to do this.”

Previous meeting between Cuba and USA

The teams last met in a World Cup qualifier in November. The US rallied towards to end to win 95-90. It was the first game of the six-game qualifying round for both teams.

The Americans (4-1) have qualified for the second round and are on track to reach the 2023 World Cup. Cuba (0-5), on the other hand, have been eliminated, with only pride at stake on Monday.

Winning qualifiers on the road is no easy task, but it sure helps when somebody has a record night shooting the ball. @JJacks_44 dropped 26 & the USA Men's World Cup Qualifying Team fended off a tough 🇵🇷 team in San Juan.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers take place this week as countries look to advance to the 2023 Basketball World Cup in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines next summer.

In this qualifying window, 25 active NBA players are represented on FIBA rosters. The Dallas Mavericks have the most players represented with four, including superstar Luka Doncic with his country Slovenia. Team Canada has the most current NBA players on a National team roster with 10 in this window.

USA face Puerto Rico and Cuba

With games Friday at Puerto Rico and Monday at Cuba set to complete the first round of the tournament, the Americans (3-1) have already qualified for the second round, and going 2-0 in these next two games would move them closer to a spot in the World Cup.

USA head coach Jim Boylen spoke ahead of the games.

“I’ve said this before, and if I’m repeating myself, I’m sorry, but this is the most competitive thing I’ve ever done,” Boylen said.

“And this is why: You have 10 days to put the team together, you have 11 days together as a team, seven practices, travel, and you play meaningful games that we need to win. You’re fighting a lot of issues. That makes it the most competitive thing.”

USA not at full strength

Boylen is not taking the Olympic team to Puerto Rico and Cuba. The Americans are using a team composed primarily of either G League players or others who are playing in overseas leagues.

“It’s very difficult to come together and really play as a team,” said David Stockton, a World Cup qualifying veteran for the US who was going to be part of this team until getting sidelined by a hand injury. “I think Coach does a great job of getting us back to the basics and bringing us together in such a short time to go against these teams that have played forever. You know how hyped up those teams are to play us, and all that comes with representing the best team in the world and having USA on your chest.”
