Any seasoned New Yorker will tell you that one of the best parts of living in the city is escaping it—and more often than not, these escapes come in the form of a long weekend. Which means that with a bit of trial and error, you can become an expert at throwing your outfit essentials into a bag before ferrying yourself upstate or out east. With the right weekender bag, of course.

The thing is, with the anticipation of the ability to take quick jaunts here and there this summer as post-vaccination life opens for us, I know that the bag you pack your belongings in is equally as important as what it carries. Trust me, I have done the mad dash through Penn Station to catch the 3 pm train out to East Hampton with a zip-free tote bag. It is never pretty. Nor is spilling your PJs and clean undies out onto the floor of the Jitney in the middle of traffic. But, reader, I have found the perfect weekender bag: The Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe.

It's hard to count all of the ways that I appreciate this bag's design. First, its size; it's big enough to easily fit more than two full outfits, plus a workout set and pajamas, as well as the accompanying footwear, without being too large to comfortably carry on my shoulder. Because it's made of canvas, though, when I am not using it, I can easily fold it up and store it without taking up too much space in my closet. And the fact that it's made with sustainable materials? A win in my book.

But my favorite feature of this bag is handily the bottom zipper pocket. Should I care to bring multiple pairs of shoes with me on a quick jaunt, this compartment allows them to be separated from my clothes, which cuts down on the time I have to play Tetris trying to fit all of my belongings in one place, but even more so... putting my shoes in the same compartment I am transporting my clothes in (even if they are in shoe bags, I am not an animal) gives me a serious case of the ickies. A bottom zipper pocket effectively eliminates that problem.

A bag that is smartly designed so I feel like I'm not jamming my clothes and hoping for the best as I dash out the door is truly a game-changer. It's been a year since I first got this bag and I can easily say that it's been on every single long-weekend journey with me—and even came as my personal item on a couple of flights. From form to function, it's a piece that I can't imagine traveling without.

I bought my Catalina weekend tote ages ago, between 2015-2017, and I've used it hundreds of times since. If you saw my bag today, you'd think I had just bought it. It's still in excellent condition after all of these years and so much use! No holes, no zipper problems... looks as good as new! I love how much I can fit inside the main compartment, and I love, love, love the separated shoe compartment. I've gifted a few to loved ones over the years. Lo & Sons is a great brand with superb quality.

I have a bag from them that I use as my travel bag whenever I'm flying and its held up well. I love that it's canvas so I can wash it whenever it gets dirty. I also love that it has a separate compartment for shoes and a pocket to slip over my carry-on suitcase. This is a great bag for anyone on the go!

I love everything about Lo & Sons! I stumbled across this brand around 10 years ago when I was looking for a chic work bag that toed the line between being professional yet sleek. This definitely foots the bill! Since then, I've purchased several bags. My absolute favorite is the Catalina Deluxe Tote. It's everything a travel bag should be!

Would love to see more colors/prints in the nylon and canvas.

I've had my weekender bag for 7 years now. I love it, my wife loves it, and it's held up really well! The darker color doesn't show dirt, and it's easy to carry.

The brand carries a variety of different bags, backpacks, duffles, and accessories. They all seem to be thoughtfully crafted like the Catalina Deluxe, with pockets and features that are useful and functional

A friend gifted me a weekender and it's literally become my go-to bag for any short trips. It actually does fit a lot and the bottom shoe compartment is perfect to put in an extra pair of shoes or stick anything you need immediately. The outside pocket to hold the bag on top of luggage has been great for travel as well. The price point is great and the canvas material is pretty thick as well.

A couple of things I would love is a laptop sleeve and if I could have another zippered pocket as I currently use that one to hold the bag on top of my luggage.

Wish the bag had a little more form, especially when using the shoulder strap. Gets kinda saggy.

I've had my Waverley bag (aka the fannypack) for a few years now, and it's held up really well despite my tossing it around and generally not taking care of it. The leather is soft and supple, the black color has remained rich, and the brass hardware hasn't dinged up. Love these stylish, practical bags!

I got my work bag from them a few years ago and I love it. Super convenient for fitting lots of items and I love that the inside divider pockets are removable!

Updating the Shape. While at the factory in China, I sketched out a more conventional tote shape, while trying to keep the overall Catalina minimalist aesthetic that masks all the functionality inside.
